Indo-Sri Lanka conference on ABSD
The Indo-Sri Lanka conference on' Agro-Biotechnology for Sutainable
Development' (ABSD) began yesterday at the Bandaranaike Memorial
International Conference Hall(BMICH).
The conference which will conclude today will explore scientific
excellence growing in the field. The goal of the international
conference is to bring together researchers, managers,policymakers and
other groups of the scientific community, who are active in related
areas and to give them a forum for exchanging information through the
presentation and discussion of papers dealing with a wide variety of
topics.
Leaves for Oman
Former National Institute of Education (NIE) Aesthetic Education
Director and veteran artiste Miranda Hemalatha left for Oman yesterday
to participate in some cultural shows.
She has been invited as the chief guest for some Sri Lankan cultural
shows which are to take place during these two weeks.
Traditional Kandyan and Low country dancing with Bharatha Natyam
dancing events will be presented at these shows organized by the Miranda
Hemalatha Kala Ashramaya Students Association in Oman. The shows will be
well patronised by Sri Lankans working and living in Oman.
Girly Gunawardena passes away
Girly Gunawasrdena, the mother of Sabeetha Perera passed away on
March 11. She was the wife of late actor Stanley Perera and a mother of
three daughters. Gunawardena was 70 at the time of death. The funeral
took place at Borella Cemetery yesterday.
Buddhist discussion
The next Buddhist panel discussion of the Colombo YMBA will be held
on Sunday, March 18 at 10 am at its Borella building on “Mindfulness the
Way to Nibbana”. The panelists are Dhamma Weerakoon and Maharagama
Cancer Hospital director Dr Kanishka Karunaratne with Rajah Kuruppu as
moderator.
Dhamma discussions
Dhamma discussions by Ven Olande Ananda Thera of the Pagoda
Meditation Centre are held every second Wednesday of the month. The
inaugural Dhamma discussion will be held on Wednesday, March 14 from 7

National Catholic Deaf Day
The National Catholic Deaf Day celebration will be held at our Lady
of Lanka Basilica Tewatta, Ragama on March 18 at 9 am. Bishop of
Kurunegala His Lordship Rt Rev Dr Harold Anthony will officiate at the
Holy Mass. Rev Fr Sudath Silva, Chaplain of the Deaf. Rev Sr Jacintha
Jayasinghe, P H Patroness of St Joseph's Past Pupils’ Welfare
Association of the Deaf and Rev Sr Damayanthi PH will assist with the
Holy mass in sign language.
Wildlife lecture
Dr Wolfgang Dittus will speak on the “Problems with monkeys; myths
and solutions” on March 15 at 6 pm at the Institute of Engineers (Wimalasurendra
Auditorium) 120/15, Wijerama Mawatha, off Wijerama Mawatha (BMICH end)

Madhura Sandhya
The Tagore Society in collaboration with the Indian Cultural Centre
will hold Madhura Sandhya from 5 pm – 7 pm on March 15 at the John De
Silva Theatre with Cultural and Arts Minister T B Ekanayake as the chief
guest and Indian High Commissioner Ashok K. Kantha as the Guest of
Honour.

The Annnual General Meeting of the Colombo branch of the Past
Students Union of Vijitha Central College, Dickwella will be held on

Awards ceremony
The certificate presentation ceremony for the pre-school teachers
training course conducted by the National Youth Services Council will be
held on March 24 at 3 pm at Sanasa Hall, Maradagahamula. .

A training seminar on “Food additives,contaminants and safety” will
be conducted by the Institute of Chemistry, Ceylon at its headquarters
