'Anti- Lanka resolution totally unwarranted'
Chaminda PERERA
The government yesterday insisted that the US sponsored resolution
against Sri Lanka is totally unwarranted at a time when the government
is in the process of implementing the recommendations of the Lessons
Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC).
The government's response came few hours after the US moved a
resolution against Sri Lanka at the 19th session of the United Nations
Human Rights Council in Geneva on Wednesday.
According to Foreign Ministry Additional Secretary Sarath Dissanayake,
the government views the US move against Sri Lanka as an external
intervention into the country's internal issues at a time when the
government has expedited the implementation of the LLRC recommendations.
He said that Sri Lanka has made many achievements in the fields of
resettlement, rehabilitation and reconciliation in the aftermath of 30
years of conflict.
Dissanayake said that the Sri Lankan delegation in Geneva will
apprise member countries of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) that
moving a resolution against Sri Lanka at this point of time is totally
uncalled for as the government is committed to the implementation of the
LLRC recommendations.
Dissanayake told the Daily News that members of the Sri Lankan
delegation will inform UNHRC members how the government has succeeded in
implementing the recommendations of the Commission appointed by
President Mahinda Rajapaksa to promote reconciliation in the aftermath
of three decades of conflict.
