Certain elements attempting to trigger clashes - PM

Certain local and foreign groups are attempting to prove that there are clashes between the Sinhalese and Tamils, said Prime Minister and Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs Minister D.M.Jayaratne.

"Western elements are trying to create conflicts in emerging economies. They are trying to make us disappointed.

'Some groups of both local and foreign origin are supporting Western elements to achieve their aims. People should know how to face those tricks in an intelligent manner and it will help us to defeat all those elements.",the Prime Minister said.

Prime Minister Jayaratne was addressing a fund distribution ceremony at the Ramakrishna Hall in Wellawatta recently.

The event was organized by the Hindu Affairs Department. Rs.13.5 million was distributed among 135 Hindu kovils islandwide.

Each kovil received Rs.100,000 for their development activities and Hindu priests of those kovils received funds from the Prime Minister.

"Certain parties are trying create conflicts in Sri Lanka. They are trying to prove that to the international society as well, Prime Minister stated.

"I have been to areas in the North and East, such as, Jaffna,Vavuniya,Kilinochchi,Mullativu and Batticaloa.

"We have seen that the Sinhalese and Tamils in those areas are living in a friendly manner. Sinhalese and Tamils have been living in harmony for a long time.

"All should respect each other and it will help to continue harmony in society.

"As a government, we have taken all measures to create a healthy mentality in the people," the Prime Minister said.

"As a country affected by war over three decades, Sri Lanka has to achieve a number of goals to stand as a developed country.

'All should rally against the false allegations presented by certain foreign elements,he said.

Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister W.D.J.Senevirate and Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs Deputy Minister M.K.D.S.Gunawardena also participated.
