Skills certificates for school leavers

Education Deputy Minister Vijith Vijayamuni Soyza, stated in Parliament that it had been planned to issue skills certificates on technical knowledge to students of schools under the 'One Thousand School Development Project,' when they leave school. The Deputy Minister further said that the skills certificates would be issued on the technical knowledge of subjects such as carpentry, metal work, pottery, weaving, masonry, radio technology, etc.

The Deputy Minister made this observation in response to a question raised by UNP MP Buddhika Pathirana for oral answers.

He also stated that these subjects were taught in schools, adding that each year 75 teachers were trained and absorbed into the service. Out of them, about 60 students were from the Sinhala Language medium and 15 from the Tamil Language medium. The Sinhala Language medium teachers had been trained at the Teacher Training School, while the 15 Tamil Language medium teachers had been trained at the Addalaichenai Training College in Ampara.

He also stated that there was no issue in the number of trained teachers.
