Child sex abuse figures high in North

In 2011, 179 children had been sexually abused and 102 sexually
assaulted in the Northern Province. Forty five had contracted marriage
when they were underage. These figures had been obtained from complaints
made at office,” said Northern Province Children’s Probation Department
Commissioner M T Viswaruban to the press.
He said that the number of sex abused children is more in Jaffna than
other places. Sixty five children in Jaffna, 39 in Vavuniya, 32 in
Mullaithivu, 28 in Kilinochchi and 15 in Mannar had been identified.
Sexual assault had been the highest in Vavuniya. Forty five in
Vavuniya, 32 in Mullaithivu, 12 in Jaffna, 11 in Mannar and two in
Kilinochchi had been recorded.
Marriage of under-age children figures the highest in Mullaithivu.
Eighteen under-age marriages in Mullaithivu, 14 in Jaffna , 08 in Mannar,
04 in Kilinochchi and 01 in Vavuniya had been recorded.
One hundred and eight children had been permanently separated from
their parents. The highest number is from Vavuniya. Twenty five are from
Jaffna, 15 from Kilinochchi and 08 from Mullaithivu.
