Dr. Damitha Abeyrathne who competed in the SL-A Cars upto 1050cc
event at the Colombo Night Races, has been banned for three years.
The Colombo Night Races were held in December last year. Sri Lanka
Automobile Sports (SLAS), the governing body for motor racing in Sri
Lanka has imposed the ban on Abeyrathne after he was found guilty of
illegally modifying the car which he drove during the event.
After the conclusion of the event, another competitor had protested
and the SLAS held an inquiry. According to SLAS officials, Abeyrathne
has been disqualified from his finishing position and a general ban has
also been imposed on him.
SLAS officials hope that this ban would help to maintain the standard
of Sri Lankan motor racing while maintaining a clean record.
“This will also be a lesson for all involved in racing and SLAS will
do whatever needful to take action to entertain the protests,” they
said.
Abeyrathne has been involved in racing for almost 10 years.
