False torture claims of failed UK asylum seekers exposed
The UK Border Agency (UKBA) has concluded that deportees from the UK
sent to Sri Lanka following failed asylum applications face no real risk
of ill-treatment upon return. This is stated in a letter from the office
of the UK Treasury Solicitor’s Department to the Royal Courts of Justice
following an inquiry into the alleged harassments and torture of a Sri
Lankan Tamil deportee who arrived in Sri Lanka on Tuesday, February 21.
This finding by the UKBA follows an inquiry into a complaint about
torture of this deportee made by Freedom From Torture (FFT), which had
stated that this person was subjected to torture at the airport by the
Criminal Investigation Department (CID) after his arrival in Colombo.
This person whose claim for asylum had been initially refused and
also been refused in injunction to prevent his removal from the UK. A
thorough inquiry into this allegation had been initiated by the British
High Commission in Colombo which also obtained medical evidence that did
not substantiate the allegation of torture and harassment made by this
deportee.
