Udaya adjudged overall best player
Anuradha ABEYSEKERA
Udaya Ranasinghe of Vidyartha College, Kandy was adjudged the overall
best player and awarded the Surendra Perera Memorial Challenge Trophy in
the All Island Junior Ranking Table Tennis Championship which concluded
at the S. Thomas' Indoor Stadium, Mount Lavinia recently.
Western Province Table Tennis Association (WPTTA) conducted the
tournament at two venues in Mount Lavinia, Lalith Athulathmudali College
Indoor Stadium and S. Thomas' Indoor Stadium on February 18 and 19 where
more than 430 paddlers from all parts of the country vied for honours in
11 age category events.
Udaya performed exceptionally well in the tournament and qualified
for the finals in all four participated events.
He won the under 18 boys singles event, under 15 boys singles shield
and partnered under 18 mixed doubles title with Chandima Madushani of
Mahamaya College Kandy. Udaya and his school mate Krishan
Wickkramarathne became the runner up of under 18 boys doubles event.
Meanwhile Umaya Tharakie of Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda who
bagged the under-18 girls title was adjudged the Most Outstanding
players (Girls) of the Championship.
The trophy for the best overall performance (girls and boys) was
named in memory of former Colombo District Table Tennis Association
President Surendra Perera who passed away recently.
Retired Principal of the Lalith Athulathmudali College Nilantha
Ekanayaka was the chief guest at the award ceremony and praised by the
TTASL officials for his contribution for the development of the sport,
specially in the Western Province by pioneering building of the new
Indoor stadium at the Lalith Athulathmudali College which later became
the main practice venue for Western Province paddlers after abolishing
TTASL head quarters at the Race Course.
