Students’ contribution vital to build country - Dinesh

“The country’s education system should be revamped in a manner that
would provide ample opportunities for the student generation as their
contribution is pivotal to build the country,Sri Lanka Mahajana Ekasath
Peramuna Leader and Water Supply and Urban Development Minister Dinesh
Gunawardena said.

He was addressing a public rally to mark the the 56th anniversary of
the the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna at Viaharamaha Devi Park yesterday.
“The Mahajana Eksath Peramuna was the driving force behind the 1956
people’s revolution which turned a new chapter in the history of Sri
Lanka”.
“Every student should get an opportunity to learn in their respective
fields and the government has a responsibility to create new avenues for
them”, he added.
Minister Gunawardena said that the public should be more vigilant as
certain elements with vested interests are trying to topple the
government by hatching various conspiracies. He said that these sinister
forces want to topple the government to exploit the country.
“Sri Lanka is not an oil producing country and we totally depend on
oil imports. We accept the people’s grievance due to the recent fuel
increase”, he pointed out.
“But people always stood united when the country faced a crisis . The
time has come to shed all differences and join together for the
country’s prosperity. The 1956 people’s revolution became a turning
point in Sri Lanka’s history as it brought all progressive forces of the
country under one banner.
“The MEP established from several national organizations with the
support of fivefold forces, namely, monks, the indigenous medical
practitioners, the teachers, the farmers and the workers, and removed
the country from the shackles of imperialism”, he said.
‘S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike and D.A. Rajapaksa ,Philip Gunawardena,William
Silva,the Sama Samaja Party and K.M.P. Rajarathne were the founders of
the party”, he said.
“No government was able to create a single party government after
independence. Many of them were coalition governments, he said.
Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thera, Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, Ministers Basil
Rajapaksa, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Tissa Vitharama, A.H.M. Fowzie,
Maithripala Sirisena and Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana also
participated. |
