Interested in photography from an early age, he has been taking
photographs mostly of his family and local events since his high school
days at St Patrick's College, Jaffna. His growth in various facets of
photography has closely followed the evolution of technology and life
abroad, moving through the days of box camera (Box Browney) an
instamatic, 35mm SLR and finally to the digital SLR.
He came under greater influence of photographic techniques and themes
in when he joined Leicester and Leicestershire Photographic Society in
England as a serious amateur in 1983. He gained his Licentiateship of
the Royal Photographic Society of UK in 1984 and the membership of the
Southgate Photographic Society in London.
Both at Leicester and Southgate photographic societies Kunalan has
won competitions and trophies for his prints in monochrome and colour
and his work was accepted for a number of regional exhibitions. His main
interest has been in black & white photography spending hours of
developing and printing in his dark room. Now in the digital age he has
transitioned to colour and desktop PCs and Photoshop.
Travelling east and west, he has photographed landscapes and
communities of vast cultural diversity. His fascination with people and
places across continents continues to this day generating a massive
range of photographic images in different themes and formats. He tends
to produce bold, punchy images. He continues with his photographic
travels, adding to the countries featured in the Culturescapes
exhibition: India, Egypt, China and Morocco. More destinations are on
the way.
Kunalan's photography exhibition, Culturescapes, will be held at the
Lionel Wendt Gallery on February 24 at 6 pm. It will be open to the
public from February 25 to 27, from 9 am to 6 pm. The exhibition is a
selection of images of Morocco, China, Egypt and India from an
impressive work of travel photography. Also included are selected images
of Sri Lanka.
