Sidath takes Steel Trophy

Former Test cricketer and national selector Old Anandian Sidath Wettimuny showed his prowess in a different sport by winning the prestigious Donald Steel Trophy while that versatile lady golfer Suwen Selvaratnam carried away the plum awarded for the ladies by winning the Pam Fernando Cup at the 14th annual Donald Shield Golf Championship 2012 organized by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and worked off at the Victoria golf course at Rajawella off Kandy.

This was Sidath Wettimuny's second win in the Donald Steel golf championship having won once before in 2008 when he had to fight for the trophy against his son Sanjay in a last ditch effort and in the end it was experience which triumphed over youth.

This time Sidath Wettimuny had a big fight in his hands over the winner for the past three years Englishman Ian Tait and both had a neck to neck fight till the very end and finally it was Sidath Wettimuny who was one shot ahead of his expatriate coring 31 gross against 30 by Ian Tait. It was nothing but sweet revenge for Sidath as Ian Tait gave him a torrid time at last year's finals when the English virtually having the game in his hands sent back play into the tie breaker. This time Sidath Wettimuny gave no chance for the Englishman to pip him at the post.

Three times winner Ian Tait had to settle with the runner up berth. The Wettimunys crowned themselves with glory when the younger brother Nimal Wettimuny clinched the third spot with 28 gross – just three strokes behind the champion elder brother.
