Facelift for palmyra cultivation

Palmyra cultivation will receive a facelift with the assistance of experts from South India. Selected seeds will be grown in the nurseries and in government lands. Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises Development Minister Douglas Devananda will get the services of experts from Madras, Kerala and Thiruvanthapuram Palmyra Development Board and give training in Jaffna in Palmyra cultivation and development of palmyra product industries.

Centenary celebrations and awards ceremony

The scout movement inaugurated in 1912 at the Christ Church Vidyalaya, Matale completes 100 years in 2012.

The birthday of the Founder of the World Scout Movement, Lord Robert Stevenson Baden Powell of Gillwell falls on February 22. Annual centenary celebrations as well as his birthday celebrations and the Award Presentation Ceremony for the senior citizens who rendered yeoman service to the Sri Lankan Scout Movement would be celebrated under the patronage of Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne in Mihilaka Medura at the BMICH.

The declaration of the Asia-Pacific Territory Scout Jamboree to be held from April 1 to 6 would be made at this festival.


Conductor- driven bus brings death to devotee

A devotee who went to attend Lurth Matha festival at Mathagal on February 18 was thrown to a distance by a fast driven private bus banged against a light post, severely injuring the footboard traveller’s head. He died on the spot. The bus was alleged to have been driven by the conductor of the bus and he lost control of the vehicle.

The Police arrested the alleged driver of the bus. The deceased was identified as Peter Boniface, 41, of Mathagal.


Found Toyota car key with remote control

A reader has informed that he has found a Toyota car key with a remote control on the Kalubowila Hospital Road, in front of the Government Flats (closed to Galle Road), Dehiwela, recently.

His contact number is 0776068597, Selvanayagam. He says the rightful owner of the car keys should bring his car tax and insurance to enable him to hand over the same to the correct person/owner.

Brother D G S Dhinakaran entered into glory on February 20, 2008. On the occasion of his 4th Memorial Day, a memorial service as a tribute to the Apostle of Love will be held on Monday, February 20, 2012, at Christ Church, Galle Face at 5 pm.
