India continues to be a popular higher education destination for Sri
Lankan students due to a number of reasons, said Scientific Affairs
Senior Minister Prof Tissa Vitarana.
"As our closest neighbour we can reach India easily, the culture in
India is almost the same and this will not affect or disturb the
students unlike in some western parts of the world. The most important
fact is the students will be guaranteed quality higher education and
state of the art facilities," the minister said.
He was speaking at EdCIL 2012, the Indian Education Fair which opened
in Colombo on Friday.
Indian High Commissioner in Colombo, Ashok K Kantha, as the guest of
honour, announced the increased number of scholarships granted by the
Indian External Affairs Ministry to selected Sri Lankan students with
excellent academic achievements.
He said that these scholarships offered to Sri Lanka could be spent
over three years and the selection of candidates is done in consultation
with the Sri Lankan Higher Education Ministry to pursue undergraduate,
postgraduate and PhD Degrees in leading universities in India.
Over 60 scholarships are covered, which include undergraduate and
post graduate programmes in Performing and Visual Arts.
