58th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference:

Opportunity to show CPA, C’wealth values

The Commonwealth Parliament Association yesterday said that the 58th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference scheduled to be held in September this year will give an opportunity to the world to demonstrate that the values of CPA and the Commonwealth are well-preserved in this country.

According to chairperson of the CPA Executive Committee Sir Alan Haselhurst, members of the CPA and Commonwealth are interested in what is happening in Sri Lanka in the aftermath of a conflict. He said that the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Sri Lanka will help convince those beyond the Commonwealth that the values of CPA and the Commonwealth organization are well-preserved.

Addressing a special press conference in Colombo Sir Alan Haselhurst said that the CPA delegation led by him met a number of senior government officials who are involved in the organising of the CPA conference in Colombo.

He said that Sri Lanka has made all preparations for the upcoming conference in Sri Lanka. Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody said that the government expects 600-1000 delegates representing 54 countries and the 190 branches of CPA in the world. He said that this conference will give an opportunity to the members of the Commonwealth and other countries to see for themselves what is happening in Sri Lanka.

They can share their experience with Sri Lanka too. The Deputy Speaker said that the government is prepared to take delegates to any part of the country to show them what is happening in Sri Lanka in the aftermath of war.
