Transport Minister Kumara Welgama, yesterday stated in Parliament that 'Bell and Light' gates would be set up without delay at 61 unprotected railway crossings along the Matara-Galle railway line.

The Minister further stated that the government was taking measures to set up gates at all unprotected railway crossings and that priority would be given to the gates on the Matara-Colombo railway line.

Minister Welgama further stated that a sum of Rs 1,000 million had been allocated this year to set up gates at unprotected railway crossings, adding that a "Bell and Light" gate would cost a sum of Rs 6.5 million.

The Transport Minister also stated that there were 90 unprotected railway crossings on the Matara-Galle railway line and gates have already been set up at 29 of these crossings.

The minister was responding to a question raised by UNP MP Buddhika Pathirana.
