S M Wijayaratne, Kurunegala Daily News Corr
"The government has decided to prohibit the fragmentation of coconut
lands that are more than five acres in extent. The earlier limit which
was 10 acres has now been reduced to five acres.
'According to the existing law, it is totally prohibited to divide
coconut lands into plots that are more than 10 acres.
'The Plantation Industries Ministry has now decided to revise the Act
of Fragmentation of tea, rubber and coconut estates and the amended Act
has already been forwarded for Cabinet approval.
'The main objective of this proposed programme is to save the coconut
industry as the fragmentation of coconut lands has led to a drastic drop
in coconut production," said R M Amarabandu, a senior coconut
development officer in Kurunegala to the 'Daily News'.
