Intl musicians at the SOSL
The SOSL will present Mozart's Overture to The Magic Flute, Richard
Strauss' Horn Concerto No 1 in E flat major and Beethoven's majestic
Symphony No 5 on February 18. The orchestra will be conducted by Dr
Hans-Jurgen Nagel with Aron Konczei playing solo French-Horn in Richard
Strauss' Horn Concerto.
Dr Hans-Jurgen Nagel was appointed music director of the Bonn Music
Conservatory at the relatively young age of 30, and was later made
director of the Bonn International Beethoven Festival and of the
festival "Days of Contemporary Music." He has worked with composers such
as John Cage, Xenakis, H W Henze and Luigi Nono and leading soloists
such as Maurizio Pollini (piano), and Gidon Kramer (violin).

This versatile conductor has toured extensively in many countries
such as Israel, Korea, India, China, Romania and Sri Lanka. In addition,
he teaches, publishes and is involved in TV and CD productions. He is
also a member of the Bayreuth International Young Artists Meeting and of
the board of the Society for Contemporary Music.
Dr Nagel, whose concert with the SOSL last year was a great success,
will conduct the SOSL in German Masterworks, which will be performed at
the Musaeus College New Auditorium at 7 pm.
The Hungarian French-Horn soloist Aron Konzcei has a varied
orchestral experience. He has played solo Horn for the State Opera of
Wiesbaden, for the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra conducted by Daniel
Baremboim and for the Mahler-Bruckner cycle in Europe, USA and South
America with Daniel Baremboim and Pierre Boulez.
He studied music at the Palma Szilagyi -Conservatory of Music under
Leo Warner and later at the Academy of Music "Hans Eisler" Berlin with
Professor Marie-Luise Neunecker.
His considerable achievements include reaching the finals at many
International Horn Competitions and winning first prize at the
International Horn Competition, Bekes(Hungary) and at the National Horn
Competition for Conservatories (Hungary). The Brass section of the
orchestra will undoubtedly benefit from the presence of Konczei, who
will not only train them but will join them in the performance of the
Beethoven Symphony. Diethelm Kühn, Professor of Clarinet at the Hanns
Eisler Academy of Music, will visit Sri Lanka during this time to train
the woodwind musicians of the SOSL. The winner of many international
competitions, Prof Kühn was awarded the Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy
scholarship for his artistic achievements.
Since 1970 Diethelm Kühn has performed as soloist and in chamber
music ensembles in Germany and abroad and made several radio recordings.
Guest performances took him to Poland, the former Czechoslovakia,
Hungary, Cuba, Tunisia, Sweden, France, Austria and the Netherlands.
Diethelm Kühn was recognised with the title Chamber Musicer. From
1980-90 he was clarinetist and bass clarinetist in the ensemble
NeueMusik Hanns Eisler in Leipzig. He began his teaching career in 1978
at the Academy of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin, where he was tutor and then
lecturer. In 1992 Diethelm Kühn was appointed Professor of Clarinet at
the Academy of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin.
Prof Kühn will train the wood wind section of the orchestra, honing
their skills and enhancing the quality of their performance, during his
visit to Sri Lanka. |
