Harischandra and Abeykoon excel in weightlifting

Dhammika Harischandra (women’s) and K C A T S Abeykoon (men’s) excelled at the Kandy Young Men’s Christian Association’s members annual weightlifting championship worked off at the Wijewickrema Fitness Centre Kandy over the weekend.

Dhammika Harischandra a national lifter holding two records competing in the plus 75 kg category lifted a total of 145 kilogrammes which was better than some of the totals made by the boys in the junior category. K C A T S Abeykoon competing in the higher weight of 94 kg made a total lift of 285 kg which was better than the total lift of 178 kg by G L J C Dayananda in the highest body weight category. The best lift in the junior category was by N M Sideek in the 94 kg (junior) who hoisted a total of 227 kilogrammes.

This weightlifting championship was organized by former national coach Athula Wijewickrema and Executive Seceretary YMCA S A Wijewickrema while Nihal Wimalasuriya (Chairman), K K Asanga and S Pradeep officiated as judges.
