Rain affects school cricket

Rain delayed the start of the first day's play of the under-19 inter-schools match between Royal College Colombo and Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa yesterday at Reid Avenue. Joseph Vaz College won the toss and put the Royalists into bat.

Royal were 127 for 4 in 29 overs at close of first day's play. Right hander Isuru Gunathilake helped royal with 49 runs inclusive of eight boundaries. They were well supported by Sampath De Silva (33) while Hashen Ramanayake also contributed with 30 runs including four boundaries and a six. Left arm leg spinner Hasanka Rathnayake took two for 36 while Shavindu Dimantha bagged two for 34 for Joseph Vaz.

Devin scores 111

Devin Jayasinghe with an elegant knock of 111 runs which consisted thirteen fours and four sixes put on S Thomas' College, Mt Lavinia in a commanding position in their second eleven cricket match against Prince of Wales College played at Moratuwa.

Prince of Wales 53 (Abdul Cader 3 for 20, Devin Jayasinghe 2 for 2, Neomal Wickremarathne 3 for 5, Basitha Jayasuriya 2 for 2).

Delayed start at Moratuwa

The inter-schools cricket tournament match between St Sebastian's College and Gurukula Vidyalaya, Kelaniya had a delayed start at 1.15 pm yesterday at Moratuwa.

Gurukula Vidyalaya 162 (Hashan Dumindu 35, Chamod Sulakshana 25, Nipul Maduka 24, Kasun Madushan 21, Sanitha de Mel 3 for 32, Satchintha Gunawardene 3 for 35, Anuk Fernando 2 for 31, Amila Aponso 2 for 39).

St Sebastian's 43 for no loss (Luke Jayadeva 20 n.o., A Perera 20 n.o.).

Asiri puts Thomians on top

Asiri Wickramanayake put S Thomas' College, Mt Lavinia on top by stroking a brilliant unbeaten 103 runs which included eleven hits to the rope and facing 179 balls and occupying the crease for 235 minutes and carried off the bat in their inter-school under 19 cricket match played at Mt Lavinia against Prince of Wales College.

Prince of Wales 117 (Suchira Fernando 40, A B T M Sumanasiri 4 for 18, R G Mathangaweera 3 for 16).

Kegalu Vidyalaya in the box seat

Kegalu Vidyalaya are in a very strong position at the end of the first day's play in their schools under 19 cricket tournament match against Sri Piyaratne Maha Vidyalaya, Padukka which began at the Army Grounds, Ambepussa yesterday. The match will be continued today at 9.30 am.

Having dismissed Sri Piyaratne MV for 82, Kegalu Vidyalaya replied with 202 all out, thus gaining a lead of 120.

Sri Piyaratne MV are in a bad position in their second innings with the score at close being 78 for 5 and they still need 42 runs to avoid an innings defeat with a whole day to bat.

Sri Piyaratne MV: 82 all out in 28.2 overs (Manuwan Liyanage 10, Wishwa Madawa 31, Akila Chamara 12, Bimshendra Ranaweera 5 for 21, Tharaka Somatilleke 3 for 20), and 78 for 5 in 18 overs (Y Randuna 22, Manuwan Liyanage 33, S Sampath 15, Bimshendra Ranaweera 2 for 22, Samadhi Dassanayake 2 for 4).

Wayamba Royal struggles

Taxila Maha Vidyalaya, Horana were on top at the end of the first day's play in their schools under 19 cricket tournament match against Royal College, Wayamba which commenced at Giriulla yesterday. The match will be continued today at 9.30 am.

Horana Taxila Vidyalaya taking first strike ran up a good total of 245 all out with good contribution coming from A L Kannangara 71 (12 fours) and D Sampath 51 (10 fours). Off spinner Yasith Herath bowled well to capture 5 for 43.

Taxila Maha Vidyalaya: 245 all out in 23.5 overs (A L Kannangara 71, D Sampath 51, N D Perera 28, P Kavindu 23, Yasith Herath 5 for 43, Neomal Panditha 2 for 50).

Wayamba Royal College: 82 for 5 in 16 overs (Hasantha Lahiru 28, N Panditha 10, Yasodh Kavindu 31).

Kavindu bags 6 for 53

Kavindu Ashan bagged six for 53 runs to put Panadura Royal College on top at the end of the first day against Ananda College Colombo played at Panadura Yesterday.

Ananda: 131 (Thushara Samarakoon 53, Kavindu Ashan 6 for 53, Thenuka Dhananjaya 3 for 37)

Josephians 156 for 4

Rain interrupted the first day of the match between St. Joseph's College and St. Aloysius College, Galle played at Darley Road yesterday. St. Aloysius College won the toss and chose to field.

Joes were 156 for four in their first innings at the end of the first day. Sachin Hewawasam made a valuable score of 51 runs inclusive of four boundaries while Supeshala Jayathilake contributed with 34 runs. Dhanushka Malan was the most impressive among the bowlers with two wickets for 41 runs.
