Sri Lankans suspected in ATM robberies

Indonesian Police said they have arrested two Sri Lankans who are suspected of stealing hundreds of millions of rupiah using fake ATM cards. “We have arrested two people. The first suspect, is a Sri Lankan citizen and was caught on January 29 while using a CIMB Niaga ATM in Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta,” Police Spokesman Saud Usman Nasution said.

The man was allegedly in possession of Rp 64 million ($7,200), 25 fake ATM cards and an official asylum seeker’s identity document.

The next day, Saud said, police arrested another man, who they suspect is also Sri Lankan, although he was found to be in possession of a fake Indonesian national identity card. He said the man was caught while using an ATM in Gambir, Central Jakarta, and was found with Rp 55 million.

Police are investigating to see if the cases are linked.
