‘Syria veto to avert bloodshed’
China’s official Xinhua news agency said
yesterday Beijing and Moscow’s veto of a UN Security Council
resolution on Syria was designed to prevent more “turbulence and
fatalities” in the violence-hit state. Russia and China’s Saturday
veto of a resolution condemning Syria’s crackdown on protests has
sparked an international outcry, and came just hours after reports
that troops in the city of Homs had killed hundreds of civilians.

Violence claims 48 more deaths in Syria
The violence in Syria has claimed 48 more
victims, including 18 soldiers and six army deserters, amid growing
outrage following a “massacre” in the protest city of Homs, a rights
group said Sunday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights had 24
hours earlier alerted the world to over 200 deaths overnight Friday
during an assault by regime forces in the central flashpoint of Homs.

Western and Arab powers have reacted angrily to
Russia and China's veto of a Security Council resolution on the
Syria crisis, but Moscow and Beijing insisted the text had needed
more work. Russia, a long-time Syrian ally, and China had on
Saturday vetoed a UN Security Council resolution condemning the
Syrian government's deadly crackdown despite reports by Syrian
activists that troops overnight had killed 230 civilians in the city
of Homs.
