Jetwing Yarl Hotel foundation laying ceremony

The foundation stone laying ceremony of Jetwing Yarl hotel in Jaffna, was held with the participation of Prime Minister D M Jayaratne and Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa yesterday in Jaffna. Mercantile Merchant Bank Ltd, and the Jetwing Group, through an equally owned joint venture will invest Rs 700 million on this hotel project. Jetwing Yarl hotel is to be constructed on a 46 perch land area on the Old Clock Tower Road, in Jaffna. The star class hotel will have 76 rooms, 14 storied, roof top swimming pool, Presidential suite, while the construction work is to be completed within 18 months. This hotel will create employment for youths in the area, in addition to boosting income and business opportunities to the self-employed, micro enterprises and farmers.

Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Minister Douglas Devananda, Northern Province Governor Major General G A Chandrasiri, Milinda Moragoda, Jetwing Hotels Managing Director Ruwan Samarasinghe and Jetwing Travels (Pvt) Limited Managing Director Shiromal Cooray also participated.


Meelad-un-Nabi celebrations

The annual Meelad-un-Nabi celebrations organized by the Kalutara District Ahadiyya Federation will be held tomorrow at 2pm at Al-Husmaisara National School, China Fort, Beruwala.

Former Sri Lankan ambassador to Saudi Arabia and China Fort Mosque Society chairman Nowfel S Jabir will preside. Islamic Republic of Iran Embassy cultural counsellor G Rokni will preside. Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana will participate as a special guest.


Maya Krishna Rao’s lecture, demonstration on February 8

Indian theater personality Maya Krishna Rao will conduct a lecture cum demonstration on Contemporary Theatre Practices on February 8 at 9am at the University of Visual and Performing Arts auditorium, 21 Albert Crescent, Colombo 7.

Maya Krishna Rao is known for her solo as well as group creations. She has had training in Kathakali in Delhi and Kerala. She is specialized in male roles and had several performances in India and abroad in Ramayana and Mahabharata as well as Shakespeare’s Othello.

She has done her post graduation in Political Studies as well as Theatre Arts. She has choreographed for films and participated in many theater festivals in various parts of the world.


Death of former SP Land Commissioner and Director

Former Southern Provincial Land Commissioner and one time Director General of Samurdhi Authority Chandra Ranasingha, passed away.

Ranasingha was a consultant to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority. The funeral will take place today at the General Cemetery, Kanatte at 5. p.m. Cortege leaves residence 5037, Prestige City, Kothalawala, Kaduwela at 4.00 p.m.


Residential training course

A residential training course for Sinhala and Tamil teachers organized by the National Languages and Social Integration Ministry, under its programme of setting up national language societies countrywide, will begin at the Bindunuwewa Inservice Training Centre in Bandarawela on February 10.

A batch of 100 volunteers and school teachers from Badulla district will attend the training course.


Odissi dance recital

The Indian Culture Centre, Colombo in association with the University of Visual and Performing Arts is organizing an Odissi dance recital of Alpana Nayak from India on February 10 at 6pm at the auditorium of the University of Visual and Performing Arts, 21, Albert Crescent, Colombo 7.

Alpana Nayak will present an Odissi dance solo in the classical style that was embellished by her gurus, the late Deva Prasad Das and Sudhakar Sahoo. Alpana Nayak will also conduct a lecture cum demonstration of Odissi dance at the University of Visual and Performing Arts on February 10 at 10am.

Her performance and lecture demonstration are open to the public.

Meelad un Nabi celebrations

Meelad un Nabi celebrations organized by The All Ceylon YMMA Conference will be held tomorrow at 4.30 pm at the Dr A M A Azeez Auditorium, YMMA Headquarters, Colombo.

Al Hafiz S Seyyed Abdur Rahman Alim of Mahlarathul Qadhiriya Arabic College, Kayalapattanam, South India will be the guest speaker.


Get together

The annual get together of the past pupils of Pelmadulla Gankanda Central College will be held at the Gemunu Regimental swimming pool premises on February 11 from 7pm.


Islamic lecture

An Islamic lecture on ‘The status of a man when death over takes him’ by Ash Sheikh Mufthi Yoosuf Haniffa (Abu Umar) will be held on February 7 immediately after Luhar prayers at Muhiyadeen Jummah Masjid, Aluthkade.


Kariyakarawana 90 on Feb 8

Journalist D F Kariyakarawana will be 90 years on February 8.

He was the Editor of several Sinhala publications including the Silumina. Kariyakarawana was the vice president of the International Organization of Journalists for 14 years. He was also the founder of the Diploma in journalism course at the Colombo University and functioned as an organiser and a lecturer for 20 years.
