New committee to examine contestants

A new committee headed by the Director General of Department of Sports Development Mrs. Ranjani Jayakody was appointed by the Sports Ministry Secretary Udaya Senaviratne to submit recommendations of the top official contestants of the National Sports Associations at the upcoming elections to the Sports Minister, the Sports Ministry said.

The committee is to examine and consider the service rendered by the officers to the national sports under special criteria according to the Sports Ministry.

According to the Sports Act No 25 of 1973, sports qualifications were made mandatory to contestants that are to contest for the top positions of the upcoming elections of the Sports Associations. However, according to the Sports Act the Minister has the authority to approve the contestants without this qualification.

The other committee members are, Retired IGP Jayantha Wickremaratne, Panduka Keerthinanda Attornet-at-Law and the Assistant Director, Department of Sports Development N K Abeysinghe.
