Legal action against Matara’s dengue breeders

Matara Municipal Council Public Health officials will take legal
action against over 100 persons for having mosqutio breeding places in
their homes and business premises during the last two weeks.
The Matara Municipal Council launched a massive dengue prevention
campaign in the area.
A majority of them are public servatns including doctors and
engineers, a spokesman for the Public Health Office said. They were
detected from Hittetiya east and West regions, Izadeen Town, Uyanwatta
and Tudawa.
Electric short circuit caused van fire

The fire that broke out in a van on the Kalutara-Horana main road on
January 26 morning, was caused by an electric short circuit in the van's
unprotected petrol tank, investigations have revealed.
The fire had claimed the lives of four, including two children aged
11 and six, the Police said.
The van driver had said that a temporary container had been used as a
makeshift petrol tank which was placed directly under the passenger seat
at the back of the van. An extra petrol container had also been placed
in the vehicle. Seven others were hospitalized.
Photo exhibition, bhajans, film on Gandhi
The Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo is paying homage to Mahatma
Gandhi with a photographic exhibition on Gandhi and by singing his
favourite bhajans on Martyrs’ Day at the J.D.A.Perera Gallery, 46,
Horton Place, Colombo 3 at 5.30 p.m. In India, January 30 is celebrated
as Martyrs’ Day.
The programme will highlight the relevance of Gandhi and his ideals
and will include a display of photographs of the Life and times of
Gandhi and his favourite and bhajans The bhajans will be presented by
the students of the Indian Cultural Centre and it will be followed by
screening of Richard Attenborough’s film ‘Gandhi’. All are welcome. For

Indian Republic Day held in Jaffna
The 63rd Indian Republic Day was celebrated at the Deputy Indian
Commissioner’s office at Palaly Road, Jaffna on January 26. Indian
Consul General V. Mahalingham presided at the celebrations and hoisted
the Indian flag. He read the message sent by the Indian President
Pradeepa Singh.
The officers of Indian visa office, Deputy Consul General S. Srikanth,
officers of Indian Bank in Jaffna, leading Indian citizens in Jaffna and
the members of the press participated. In the evening, a cultural
programme was held followed by dinner. |
