Micro Construction applauded for innovative technology

An ISO certified, M2 grade company, Micro Construction received a National Award for Innovative Technology in Construction at the Awards Night held at Water's Edge recently. This coveted title was bestowed on Micro Constructions for its innovative design known as the Micro Panel System. Organized by the Ministry of Construction, Engineering and Housing Amenities, the judging panel was an eminent panel which included engineers, consultants and structural engineers of the highest standing in the country making the award one of substance and prestige This system is also recognized by the University of Moratuwa, State Engineering Corporation, Institute for Construction Training and Development (ICTAD) and Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau.

The Micro Panel System is introduced to the market by Micro Construction which is an ISO 9001:2008 certified organization, specializing in civil engineering construction works using load bearing structural building technology. Micro Panel System relies of panels and a polystyrene layer with a concrete overlay, which gives a finish similar to a conventional home. The polystyrene is encased with galvanized high tensile steel mesh, which provides a space frame type structure to walls throughout the building. This system reduces the heat transfer to houses making it ideal for the Sri Lankan climate. By reducing the heat transfer, the well insulated buildings require little air conditioning which results in reducing the air conditioning cost by 40%. In addition to the insulation factor the light weight structure is also able to withstand earthquakes up to 8.5 on the richter scale, proving that Micro Panel Systems are durable and safe. Buildings constructed using this technology also has the ability to resist cyclones, floods and hurricane force winds of over 160MPH.

Another key feature is that buildings constructed using this system are also sound proof, making them ideal for office building structures and hospitals, as reduction of disturbance from sound is seen as advantageous. Complying with the ICC standards of the USA, the technology is versatile and easy to adapt to any new architectural design or shape, making it an ideal system for the new age architects to showcase their creativity in housing design. The system takes out the heavy costs on construction material such as bricks and it also reduces the number of man hours required by almost 50%, therefore from a customer's viewpoint it is also advantageous as it helps to reduce costs.

The Micro Panel System has currently been utilized in several construction projects throughout the island and many have benefited from the many features of this technology.

Speaking on the receiving of this award C. Guhashanka, Group Director said that "Sri Lanka is seeing new growth and the government has taken a challenge to build 300,000 houses by the end of the year. However to meet this demand conventional building techniques such as bricks would hinder the process.

The Micro Panel System allows us to construct homes much faster than using the conventional materials." He further stated that this system reduces the impact on nature as sourcing conventional raw materials damages the environment.
