Substandard tea store raided

Over 200,000 kgs tea unfit for human consumption seized:

Special Task Force (STF) and Criminal Investigation Department officials raided a tea store where substandard tea was packeted and exported to foreign countries yesterday.

The officials also nabbed a consignment of tea weighing over 200,000 kilograms, unfit for human consumption.

The value of this consignment was over Rs 12 million. According to STF officials, the store rooms had not been registered with the Sri Lanka Tea Board.

This tea store was exporting 1,000 kilos of tea 15 times a month. Sri Lanka Tea Board officials were not aware of this factory. The store purchased tea waste from factories in Welamboda, Gampola. The Sri Lanka Tea Board is conducting tests to verify the quality of tea.

Investigations are being carried out under the guidance of CID DIG Jayantha Kulathilaka.
