Dy Minister injured in mishap

Social Services Deputy Minister Chandrasiri Sooriyarachchi yesterday
met with an accident while was traveling to Polonnaruwa in his vehicle.
It is reported that the Minister had suffered minor injuries and was
admitted to Polonnaruwa hospital for further treatment.
Girl abducted and killed
A 17-year-old girl of Sakkodai, Point Pedro has been abducted and
killed. The body was traced in a vacant house near the Sakkodai Old
Church. It is suspected that she had been abducted near her home, raped
and murdered by unknown persons. Point Pedro Police are investigating.
She was a student of the Alvai North Roman Catholic Tamil School.
Inter-Auditors' cricket fiesta
The annual Audit Firm Cricket Tournament organised by the Practicing
Accountants Chartered Students' Society (PACSS) for the 30th consecutive
year will be held on February 28 and 29 at the NCC Ground, Colombo. A
highlight of this event is the matches between the special invitees
including the newly appointed Governing Council of Chartered Accountants
of Sri Lanka headed by President Sujeewa Rajapaksha.

A motorcyclist was fined Rs 10,000 for riding under the influence of
liquor and without proper documents.
Buddha statue inauguration
The country's biggest Buddha statue in the sitting posture with 80
disciples will be built at the Galgoda Sri Maha Viharaya, Panadura under
the patronage of Chief Incumbent Ratnapura Pothupitiye Ven Pannasekera
Thera with the blessings of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The
construction will be inaugurated on January 29 at 9.00 am.
Tharunyata Hetak Organization chairman and Hambantota district
Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa will be the chief guest.
Religious ceremony
The third religious ceremony in the series of ceremonies being held
under the auspices of the Kumarasiri Hettige Foundation to pay homage to
the Sacred Tooth Relic will be held tomorrow. Six hundred devotees
selected from remote areas are expected to participate in these
ceremonies being held to invoking blessings on the President and the
country. The devotees are scheduled to leave Getabaruwa Raja Maha
Viharaya in Kotapola, Deniyaya tomorrow at 2.00 am. The Kumarasiri
Hettige Foundation has made arrangements to organize these ceremonies
islandwide in the future.
BLC Nirmani
The annual variety entertainment programme Nirmani presented by the
students of Buddhist Ladies' College, Colombo 7 will be held on January
31 at 2.00 pm at the National Youth Centre, Maharagama. The chief guest
will be First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa.
Meditation
A meditation and Dharma Deshana programme organized by the
Dharmashoka Foundation will be held at Buddhist Centre, Bauddhaloka
Mawatha, Colombo 7 every Sunday from 3 to 5 pm. Polpitimukalane
Pragnasiri Thera will deliver the Dhamma Deshana . All are welcome. The
first programme will be held on January 29 at 3 pm.
Epasinghe on ITN
Cricket commentator Premasara Epasinghe will be featured on ITN
Sports World today from 6.30 pm to 7 pm. The programme is produced by
Kapila Liyanage and presented by Priyal Weerasinghe.
Anniversary celebrations
The 21st anniversary celebration of the Saviya Development Foundation
will be held on Sunday at 9 am at the Foundation Headquarters, Wewelwala
Road, Balanwila, Galle. The Foundation had helped differently abled
people.
Panel discussion
A panel discussion on 'The legal position regarding women and child
abuse in Sri Lanka and the role of the Civil Society' organized by the
Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry to educate people in the
Gampaha district will be held at the UPFA office at Oruthota Road,
Gampaha today at 9.30 am. Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa
will be the chief guest. Panellists will include Dr Sudarshanee
Fernandopulle, MP, attorney Sumana Ariyadasa, Dr Neela Gunasekara, SCPA
Chairman Anoma Dissanayake, Nimal Weeratunge and Gampaha Zonal Director
of Education T M Premawardena.
Felicitation ceremony
The Memon Association of Sri Lanka will felicitate Wakf Tribunal
Chairman A A M Illiyas for recognition of his dedication and services to
the Memon community as a Special Quazi for 20 years and his appointment
as Wakf Tribunal Chairman.
The felicitation ceremony followed by dinner will be held by the
president and Board of Management 2011/12 of Memon Association of Sri
Lanka today at the Memon Association of Sri Lanka, Colombo 3.
