Bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and India have a very old
history of nearly 4,000 years. These relations between the two countries
are important for the future progress of both countries, said Indian
High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Ashok K Kantha.
He was speaking at the flag hosting ceremony of the 63rd Indian
Republic Day at India House yesterday.
"The Indian government is interested in assisting Sri Lanka which is
emerging from three decades of conflict. India has also provided wide
ranging facilities to Sri Lankan Buddhists. The Indian government has
taken measures to launch a special train service from Chennai for Sri
Lankan pilgrims visiting India," he said.
The High Commissioner said several important agreements were made
after Indian External Affairs Minister S M Krishna's visit to Sri Lanka.
High Commissioner Kantha hoisted the Indian national flag, which was
followed by the Indian National Anthem. The High Commissioner inspected
a guard of honour and also read excerpts from the address to the nation
on the eve of Republic Day by Indian President Pratibha Patel. A
cultural programme organized by the Indian Cultural Centre was also
held. |
