LTTE: a trail of atrocities

The country on Wednesday marked 14 years since the deplorable LTTE suicide attack on the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy which is a veritable symbol of Buddhist civilization.

The Buddhist world was shocked and saddened by the massive destruction caused to the Dalada Maligawa where the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is placed.

People of all religious faiths including state leaders and the UN condemned this heinous LTTE crime on a World Heritage Site, - The Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy. Two LTTE cadres detonated a truck laden with high powered explosives at around 6.00 a.m. on January 25, 1998 killing hundreds of persons and causing massive damage to the most revered Temple of the Tooth Relic. The Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy where the tooth relic of The Buddha is enshrined has been revered and guarded from generation to generation by the Sinhala kings and Buddhist laity.
