Lankans in next round of Olympic qualifiers
The Central Asia Qualifying Zonal Tournament for the London Olympics
2012 was held last weekend at Negambo Beach Park, Negambo, which saw the
participation of five countries comprising of Iran, Maldives, India,
Kazakhstan and Sri Lanka.
The men's category saw Iran winning the championship in a close
battle with fighting Kazakhstan team. Sri Lanka finished the with a
creditable performance to clinch the bronze medal.
In the women's event, Kazakhstan made amends for their men's team's
loss by winning the women's championship with Sri Lanka obtaining the
silver. The Sri Lankan team missed many easy opportunities and would no
doubt be disappointed that they could not annex the gold medal.
Lankan women had the better of the khasakhstan women's team (A) which
comprised of Mashkova and Tsimbalova when they best the duo 2-1.
Both Sri Lankan mens and womens teams booked their place in the next
round of Olympic qualifires.
