Sri Lanka Customs to go High-tech from February

Sri Lanka Customs implementing electronic submission of Cusdec and manifest in February.

Dr. Priyath B Wickrama

The system in use generates a large amount of paper work and document handling. This also requires a lot of space for record storage. This generates an additional problem of providing security for archival records.

Further the handling of physical documents subject them to damage and perishing which will not be present in the electronic system. The new e-manifesting system will boost the port efficiency and we look forward to make a positive impact on the industry, Sri Lanka Port Authority Chairman Dr.Priyath B Wickrama told Daily News Business.

The system will increase the efficiency in handling documentation while reducing a number of issues in the manual procedure. The service receivers will benefit as the time and cost could be saved, he said.

The need for an efficient clearing system was long overdue as the country is focusing to achieve hub statues in the region. The streamlining of transactions, payment and other related activities will augur well for the country’s shipping industry growth, he said.

The shipping industry has registered significant growth over the past years with the ongoing development activities of both the Colombo and the Hambantota ports.

Training seminars will be conducted to educate exporters and importers on the procedures of implementation of the new systems in the aspects of electronic cusdec and manifest submissions .
