Cuban film festival
The Cuban film festival will be held in commemoration of Cuban
National Day at the Library and Documentation Services Board auditorium,
Independence Avenue on January 23, 24 and 25. The event is organized by
the Sri Lanka National Committee for Solidarity with Cuba.
January 23 at 4 pm
Jose Marti, The Eye of the Canary
A fictionalized feature-length film, passionate and emotional, that
successfully explores the inner world and character building that shaped
the historical significance of José Martí, the Cuban National Hero.
The film focuses on the life of José Martí, from age 9 to 17. The
Director introduces it as "not a biography, but rather a spiritual
journey." The Cuban Film Critics Association named it as the best Cuban
film of 2010. It won the Aeriel Award at the Mexican Film Festival, the
Colon de Plata Award at the Spain Film Festival and three Coral Awards
including the Best Direction Award and eight collateral awrds at the
Havana Film Festival, New York.

Old House
Based on the classic drama by the same name the film tells the story
of Esteban who returns home from abroad after 14 years and learns of his
father's imminent death. He finds that nothing has changed during his
absence and that old grudges, secrtets etc. remain intact. Further he is
embarassed by the revealing of his sexual orientation. He become s a
virtual prisoner in his old ancestral home. This film won the Award for
the Best Film at the Cartegana Film Festival and the Highest Award at
the low-budget film festival in Holguin.

Red Hot City
Based on the novel "Bertillón 166" by José Soler Puig, this film is
set in the late 1950's in Santiago de Cuba, one of the main supply
cities of the rebels led by Fidel Castro. The film depicts the
insurrection, rebelliousness and also the solidarity in Santiago de Cuba
during the clandestine struggle of the urban fighters against Batista's
dictatorship.
