Healing souls
The Guitar Association of Sri Lanka is a recently formed
organization. Its main objective is to popularize guitar playing and
make people happy. Presently it has the leading guitar players in the
island in techniques of flamenco, classical, Jazz, Hawaiian, fusion,
trova and heavy metal.
String instruments had been an integral part of Sri Lankan music from
ancient times. Although the guitar has originated in Spain, the
instrument has come along with the European cultures.
The first ever Guitar festival in Sri Lanka was held at the Russian
Centre on Janiary 8, 2011. It was a tremendous success. The Guitar
Association believes that this concert should continue annually. This is
also an informal education to the young people in Sri Lanka.
The next Guitar festival concert is scheduled at New Town Hall,
Colombo on January 21 at 6 pm. The entrance free of charge to the
public. Amaranath Ranatunga (flamenco), Capt Jude Pieris (classical),
Anthony Surendra (fusion), Prasad and Rohan de Silva (Hawaaian), Mohomed
Iqbal and Benadict Kasturiarachchi (trova), Misha Rodrigo and Sandakelum
Perera (Fusion), are some of the leading guitarists to perform at this
concert.
Also the leading heavy metal band Stigmata (Andrew Obeysekara,
Tennyson Napolean) will thrill the crowds.
The solo Bass guitarist Upula Madushanka will produce some
heartwarming music. The ambassadors of Cuba, Vietnam, Iran and many
dignitaries will attend this concert.
