Minister Douglas Devanada was also present. |
The minister addressing a meeting at the Kailasapathy Hall of the
Jaffna University on January 11, said that he was happy to observe that
it was possible to accommodate 23,700 students at universities now,
where as it was only 12,000 in 2005.
The minister said that of the 350,000 students who sit the GCE O-L
examination, over 150,000 pass the examination.
"Out of this, about 100,000 are denied the opportunity of gaining
admission to state universities. As this was a problem even in countries
like Great Britain, the USA, China and Russia, they permitted the
establishment of private universities to circumvent this situation," he
added.
The minister said that the district standardization scheme introduced
in 1972, caused problems for the North and East students, making it
difficult for them to enter state universities.
"This is one of the reasons for the 30 year war. The Z-score system
introduced has got rid of this obstacle," he added.
He also said that a student from Galle or Matara could never gain
university admission with a credit pass and two simple passes in the
past. "But under this system, a student in Mannar had been able to enter
university this year." |
