Kidnappers jailed

Balapitiya High Court Judge Ayeshani Jayasena on Thursday delivering
the verdict of the Miriswatta girl abduction case, imposed on the
defendants two years rigorous imprisonment suspended for 10 years, fined
Rs 5,000 and ordered the 1st defendant to pay Rs 100,000 as compensation
to the plaintiff.
Hettikankanamge Don Chaminda Kumara of Ragama and Devarahandi
Priyantha de Silva of Bentota had been indicted by the Attorney General
for kidnapping a young girl from the possession of her parents on or
around August 14, 2004, promising to marry her. During the trial, the
first accused, Hettikankanamge Don Chaminda Ruwan Kumara pleaded guilty
to the charge of kidnapping and the Judge imposed the fine and
imprisonment, and compensation to the girls parents.
The second accused, Devarahandi Priyantha de Silva has to face the
aiding and abeting charge forthwith.
