Breach of trust:

One granted bail

Colombo High Court Judge Bandula Atapattu yesterday granted bail to a person charged with having committed a criminal breach of trust of Australian Dollars 1.85 million from a private company in Colombo.

The judge directed the accused to furnish cash bail of Rs 100,500 and a bond of Rs 1.5 million with two sureties. The judge also impounded his passport and directed to appear before the CID on every other week on Sundays before 12 noon.

The accused was directed to appear in court again on January 16.

Senior State Counsel Gihan Kulatunga appeared for the Attorney General and Senior Attorney Nalin Ladduwahetty appeared for the accused.


Commemorative talk

Rev Fr Aloy Peiris SJ Director of Tulana Research Centre, Kelaniya will deliver the Joseph Vaz commemorative talk on the theme of “Blessed Joseph Vaz - a role model for Priests, Bishops and Religious” on January 23 at 4 pm at SEDEC Auditorium, 133 Kynsey Road, Colombo 8. The event is organized by the Christian Alliance for Social Action (CASA).


Two more buses to Southern Expressway

The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) will add two more luxury buses to the existing fleet from today to accommodate passengers on the Southern Expressway.

The two Luxury buses in operation on the Expressway bring in revenue exceeding Rs 200,000 daily.

The success of the two buses led Transport Minister Kumara Welgama to make a request from President Mahinda Rajapaksa to expand the service.

The bus service will operate at 10.30am, 12.00 noon, 1.30pm and 3.00 pm from Colombo to Galle and vise versa.

The first bus starts at 6am and the last bus will depart at 7pm from both ends of the expressway.


JICA to develop NWP hospitals

The Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) will develop Galgamuwa and Dambadeniya Base Hospitals in the North Western Province.

Under the guidance of JICA programme, Rs 719 million has been allocated to develop the hospitals.


Technician in different role

A 24-year-old welding technician of Pehembiya, Dickwella was arrested on suspicion by Dickwella

Police in connection with the torching of a lorry owned by a businessman in Dickwella causing damages worth Rs 900,000. Investigations are continuing.


Floreat musical extravaganza rescheduled

The Floreat musical extravaganza which was to be held yesterday has now been rescheduled for January 16 at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre.

A repeat show will be held on January 17. The organising committee has informed Daily News that all tickets purchased previously for the event will be valid.


Two die in collision

Two persons, a grandfather and granddaughter were killed in a motorcycle and tractor collision at seventh mile post in Vavuniya Horowpotana road on January 8.


Thieves break into Inspector's house

A gang of robbers had stolen cash and jewellery worth Rs 200,000 from the house of a Police Inspector in Anguruwatota last week.

The Inspector attached to the Horana ASP Office had been asleep along with his wife and children on December 29 night, Anguruwatota Police OIC Chief Inspector Ajith Kumara told Horana acting magistrate Pushpa Kannangara on Thursday.
