Road needs repairs

The Balangoda-Mulgama road via Depedamulla in the Balangoda
electorate is in a dilapidated state, residents say.
The road from Wegunapattiya to Mulgama is filled with drains and pot
holes. This has caused a number of road accidents. The motorists are
reluctant to travel on the road. Farmers too face great difficulties
when transporting their produce to the market.
Wild jumbo invasion
A herd of wild elephants from Wasgamuwa sanctuary has invaded
Madawela Ulpotha and the suburbs causing severe damage to property.
Villagers said that a dangerous elephant is among them.
Floreat Musical rescheduled for Jan 9
The Floreat - musical extravaganza scheduled for January 8 has been
rescheduled for January 9. The open air show will be held at the
frontage of Royal College from 7.30 pm. Tickets purchased will be valid
for the new date. The show will feature Bathiya N Santhush’s debut
operatic performance along with Royal Opera House Soprano Kishani
Jayasinghe and Russian star Olga Sosnovskaya.
Tickets are available at the Royal College union office.
RI for reckless driver

A driver who pleaded guilty of causing the death of W H Heenbanda of
Kubukgate was sentenced to four years Rigorous Imprisonment and fined Rs
1,000 by Kurunegala High Court Judge U L Jayasuriya on Wednesday. The
Judge also ordered the accused to pay Rs 100,000 as compensation to the
victim's son Karunadasa.
The accused was charged with negligent during leading to an accident
resulting in the death of 70 year old W H Heenbanda of Kubukgate on
November 9, 2007.
Jumbo kills man

An elephant has killed a man from the Vidanagama colony in the
Giraandurukotte area, of the Mahaweli C zone.
The victim was identified as R M Ranbanda, 73. It had killed the man
while he was tying his cattle at a place by the electrified fence of the
Wildlife Conservation Department bordering the Vidaanagama colony.
Boys in different role

Two boys who broke a class room of Pelvehera junior school and robbed
Rs 6,090 and other documents, were convicted for the offences by
Dambulla magistrate Maheshika Danansuriya. They were ordered to pay Rs
3,000 each as court expenses and subjected to a one year probation
period.
Woman clubbed

A 25 year old mother of two was assaulted with a club by her husband,
injuring her head seriously. She was admitted to Dambulla base hospital.
Police arrested her husband.
Dambulla police are investigating.
Road developed

The access road to the UD division of the Bogawantalawa estate in the
Ambagamuwa Divisional Secretariat division in Nuwara Eliya has been
concreted by the Ambagamuwa divisional secretariat under the Gama Neguma
programme.
One million rupees funded by the Economic Development Ministry was
spent for this. Accordingly, with the commissioning of the road
residents of the UD division of the Bogawantalawa estate can travel
conveniently.
Meanwhile, the Kahawatura minor irrigation canal at Ambagamuwa was
reconstructed by the Ambagamuwa divisional secretariat.
The Economic Development Ministry funded Rs 500,000 for this.
Eng Ivan de Silva felicitation

The farmer community in the Mannar district will felicitate
Irrigation and Water Management Ministry Secretary Engineer Ivan de
Silva at Thirukethisvaram temple ground on January 9.
Around 20,000 farmer families in 22 farmer organizations will
organize the felicitation ceremony, said Mannar district Irrigation
Engineer Palitha Wickramatilake.
Head of the integrated farmer organization S Santhanampillai said,
"this hard working officer has made it possible to irrigate nearly
40,000 acres of paddy land by rehabilitating the major water sources in
the region.
Irrigational canals have been restored and agricultural roads have
been concreted."
Mobile service
A mobile service will be held at the Palagala Divisional Secretariat
today as part of the Development Week programme held at Divisional
Secretariat level in the Anuradhapura District to coincide with the
Deyata Kirula 2012 exhibition.
Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga will be the chief guest
at this mobile service at which several ministers, MPs, local council
members and State officials will be on hand to find solutions to
people's problems.
Navy recovers detonators

Naval personnel attached to the SLNS Dakshina in the Southern Naval
Area had recovered around seven gelignite plastic tubes and two
non-electric detonators with a safety fuse from Dadalla beach on Janury
4, Sri Lanka Navy Media Spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasooriya told
the Daily News, yesterday.

Residents in Uguressapitiya are concerned about the garbage dump in
their area increasing day by day. They urge authorities to take action
against this.
Pindapaatha tomorrow
A Pindapaatha procession organized by the Nivasiepura Buddhist
Society with the support of residents will be held at Nivasiepura
tomorrow at 3 pm.
Fifty Buddhist monks will be offered alms by Nivasie residents.
The procession will start from the Nivasie Community Hall.
Memorial ceremony
A memorial ceremony, to mark the 71st death anniversary of World
Scout Movement founder Lord Baden Powell, organised by the 9th Panadura
Royal Scout Group will be held at Royal College, Panadura today from 8
am to 11 am.
The programme includes a Bodhi Pooja conducted by Ven Dambagasare
Chandrasiri Thera, Baden Powell Memorial Speech by Scout Leader Trainer,
Sanath Rohana Wickramasinghe and an art and essay competition for Scouts
of Panadura region.
Panadura District Scout Commissioner Ananda K de Silva and Panadura
Royal College Principal, H Sarathchandra Silva will participate as
guests of honour. Scout leader Dimuthu Rangana Perera and former scouts
of Royal College, Panadura are organising and sponsoring this ceremony.
Remembering Dr Samarasinha
The opening ceremony of the Dr Ravi Samarasinha Memorial Centre will
take place on January 8 at the Ruhunu Yala National Park entrance. This
centre was established on the initiative of Dr Samarasinha's parents.
Dr Samarasinha devoted his life entirely to wildlife conservation,
having given up a career, while last serving as a doctor at the
Hambantota Hospital.
Religious ceremony
A religious ceremony to invoke blessings on the President,
government, country and the people organized by the Medagama Samagi
Welfare Society will be held at the Samagi playground, Medagahawatta,
Medagama today afternoon.
2012 - what does it unfold?
The service 2012 in the Light of God's Word will be held tomorrow at
10.30 am at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour, Bauddhaloka
Mawatha (adjoining the BMICH) Colombo 7. The speaker and minister at
this service, which is open to all, will be Dr Vijaya Corea. A special
feature will be the provision of the opportunity of anointed prayer
individually for those present.
Induction ceremony
The ceremonial induction of Professor Vajira H W Dissanayake as Sri
Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) president for 2012 will be held today
at 6.30 pm at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, 100, Independence
Square, Colombo 07.
The SLMA is the oldest medical organization in Australasia with a
proud history going back to the year 1887.

An Islamic lecture, on the importance of sharing, caring and Ikraam
will be delivered by All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulema President Sheik Mufthi
