Kandy Acting Magistrate Jayani de Alwis on Thursday issued notice on
25 undergraduates of the Peradeniya University to appear in Court in
connection with a case involving the alleged sexual abuse of a student
of the University's Art Faculty during ragging.
The acting Magistrate issued this notice after considering a request
made by the CID.
The CID in its plaint submitted to court that a team of CID officials
conducted an investigation into an incident of ragging where a student
of the Peradeniya University Arts Faculty was subjected to sexual abuse
had received treatment at the psychiatric ward of the Peradeniya
Teaching Hospital.
Following statements obtained from several second year students of
the university the names of the 25 students transpired as persons
involved in the ragging incident.
Sources said the particular student from Beliatte who suffered severe
mental trauma due to inhumane ragging had received treatment at the
Peradeniya hospital for nearly two weeks and pronounced a mental patient
by the doctors. |
