Fifty Women Development Officers appointed

Child Development and Women's Affairs Ministry has appointed 50 new
Women Development Officers who commenced their duties on January 2. All
the appointments are on a permanent basis and 40 of them have been
posted to Northern and Eastern Provinces.
According to Minister Tissa Karaliyadde, the newly appointed Women
Development Officers will undergo special training and once they
complete their training they would conduct awareness programmes for
women in rural areas. "I wish to take measures to establish "Children
and Women Bureaus in all the police stations of Northern and Eastern
Provinces to make both children and women more secure", the minister
stressed.
"I have suggested to make an amendment to the prevailing abortion law
under the advocacy of the Health Ministry. My suggestion is to allow
abortion under pregnancy complications such as underage pregnancies,
abnormal embryos, pregnancies caused by of rape close relatives", he
further noted.
