Newly appointed Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) President Upali Dharmadasa
said that the new officials must work hard for at least five years to
bring back the past glory of Sri Lanka cricket and get back to the right
track. He said this after he was elected the SLC head, uncontested in
the SLC election at the National Institute of Sports Science yesterday.
Sports Development Department Director General Ranjani Jayakody
conducted the election where most of the major posts were elected
uncontested after the main opposition Mohan de Silva’s team withdrew
their applications at the last moment. The election has put an end to
the six year Interim Committee regime.
Dharmadasa was optimistic that the SLC financial crisis will be
solved once the due ICC funds are received and said the down fall begun
after 1998. “A great amount of money has been saved by scrutinizing
security expenses with the support of local authorities in recent times
and we have identified several areas to be considered to minimize
expenses,” Dharmadasa explained. Answering a question from the media,
new president said a comprehensive development programme will start,
aiming to mould youngsters under supervision of the new treasurer Nuski
Mohamed. Indian and Pakistan tours will be arranged to give much needed
exposure to the young players.
