Less crimes against people

'Around 90 percent of the rapes that were reported in the country
were against underaged girls', said criminologist Millewa Vithanachchi
of the Police Department.
He made this observation yesterday delivering a speech at the opening
ceremony of the Crime Information Analysis Central Unit at the Criminal
Records Division of the Police in Torrington Square.
He stated that 642 crimes of D-category have been reported during the
last three months. He stated that it was a solace that out of them only
27 percent, which is 176 in number, were crimes against the people and
the rest was against property.
He added that of those 176 crimes against people, 48 percent was rape
while the rest was the causing of injuries, assault, abductions and so
on. He said the proportion of rape was considerably high compared with
the other crimes committed against humans.
Vithanachchi also stated that the analysis found that love affairs,
lack of attention, living alone at home during the day, the fact that
both parents were employed seemed to be the causes of these underage
girls being victims of rape. He also suggested that prior awareness
could be one of the best solutions to prevent the recurrence of such
crimes.
Senior Police officers, including IGP N K Ilangakoon, Senior DIG
(admin) Gamini Navaratne, DIG Gamini Dissanayake, DIG Nandana
Gunasinghe, DIG WFU Fernando and Police Spokesman SP Ajith Rohana were
present on the occasion.
