Timely Police intervention saves turtle

A tourist who had fished a turtle in the shallow sea near the Galle Fort ramparts was taken into custody by the Police yesterday on a complaint made by residents to the Galle police post.


The tourist carrying the caught turtle to be released into sea on police supervision.

At the time of the arrest the tourist was about to kill the animal for consumption, police revealed.

On investigation the police have also identified the offender as staying at a tourist resort in Galle Fort.

Making a statement, the tourist confessed to police that while he was fishing at sea near Galle Fort ramparts he caught the turtle with the help of a local fisherman who was paid Rs. 500 by him and further he was not aware of the law regarding the turtles.

However, as the turtle was alive at the time of the arrest the tourist had been ordered to release the creature to the sea on police supervision.

The O.I.C of Galle Fort Police Post on sympathetic consideration of the tourist’s old age, his sincere apology and the fact that the turtle was alive at the time of arrest had released the foreigner following thorough advice.
