Two old buildings to be demolished
The old buildings of British regime in Velanai – the capital of the
Island of Leyden (Kayts) popularly known as Bangalavaddy are to be
demolished and a two storeyed building at Velanai Bangalawaddy junction
will be built by Velanai Pradeshiya Sabha, President Velanai Pradeshiya
Sabha President C Sivarajah said. The building will be built from the
2012 NELSIP fund.
Cash award for bright student
Kamalakannan Kamalavasan of Udupiddy American Mission College who
notched the first place in the island at the GCE (AL) examination in
Mathematics was presented a gift of Rs 100,000 by Jaffna People’s Bank
Regional Manager S Pathmanathan on the instructions of the head office.
This presentation ceremony was presided over by Principal K
Tharmalingham. Manager, Valvettithurai People’s Bank R Thavanayagam,
principals of neighbouring schools and students participated in the
presentation ceremony.
Rail track laying on Jan 15
The eagerly awaited railway track laying function has been scheduled
to start on January 15 at Jaffna Central Railway Station. Indian Foreign
Minister S M Krishna and Sri Lankan Ministers are expected to inaugurate
the track laying ceremony. The track laying will commence from Omanthai
and terminate at Kankesanthurai.
No activities at 73 schools
Seventy three schools in Jaffna district did not function during the
whole of last academic year. Most of the schools are from the Jaffna
Islands division. This is revealed from the statistics kept at Jaffna
Education Office. In the islands division of the 76 schools 23 did not
function during last year. In the Jaffna Education Zone, of the 115
schools 14 did not function. The other Education Zones where schools did
not function were Valigamam Zone 21 schools, Chavakachcheri zone 10
schools, and Vadamaradchy Zone five schools.
Ramees, new dy mayor
Attorney-at-Law of All Ceylon Muslim Congress Mohamed Ramees is to be
appointed as the deputy mayor of Jaffna Municipal Council succeeding
Illango (Regan) of EPDP who has resigned his Deputy Mayorship in terms
of an agreement reached between EPDP and Muslim Congress to resign after
two years to make way for a Muslim to be elected as deputy mayor.
Mother, son injured in accidental explosion
A mother and her nine-year son were seriously injured when they
inquisitively examined a strange object found in a thicket. The strange
object exploded when they meddled with it and have been admitted to
Manthikkai Hospital. The injured were Rajakulasingham Thangamalar (33)
of Thunnalai Point Pedro and her son Haritharan of Thunnalai (9).
Rs one million worth ganja seized
Two persons were arrested at Azad Road, Navanthurai Five Junction
with Rs one million worth of packeted ganja by the Jaffna Police on
December 31. It is reported that one of the arrested persons tried to
give Rs 25,000 as a bribe to the police inspector but he has been taken
into custody.
The seized ganja was brought from Kerala to Kayts and from there it
was packeted and taken to Jaffna for sale. The arrested duo are natives
of Navanthurai and Koddady. They were produced before the Kayts
Magistrate and remanded.
Tellipallai govt hospital begins functioning
After 25 years the Tellipallai Government Hospital will begin to
function at its original place from this month. This hospital has been
functioning at Valigamam North High Security Zone. After the people were
resettled the OPD and the clinics were functioning at Tellipallai Durga
Ambal Cooperative Hospital.
This hospital has been rehabilitated from the funds of NICOT, ENTRIP
and World Bank at a cost of Rs 55 million. The World Bank has granted
ten lakhs worth of furniture and a private organization two lakhs worth
of furniture.
