‘Youth Parliament, nursery for role model politicians’

Youth Parliament which began under a concept of Youth Affairs and Skills Development Minister Dullas Alahapperuma is an excellent place to study politics.

A number of role model were found among youth parliamentarians, said film director Jayantha Chandrasiri addressing the fourth session of the Youth Parliament.

The event was held on December 19, 20 and 21 where the constitutional amendments to the Youth Summit were taken up for discussion. Chandrasiri said the work experience we gain in life is important. “The experience that youth parliamentarians receive today will help produce a superior politician in the future. Because of some of the shortcomings in politics today, such as, trickery and deceit, people think that politics is an immoral profession.”

He said politics is an important discipline in society because politics affects directly on people’s lives. “Politics is more than just listening to people’s problems. Politics requires dedication of one’s self for others in society, especially those in need and facing difficulties.

“Religious leaders and scientists perform a similar role in society. One must be willing to sacrifice many things on behalf of others in society. In that way, politics is a noble profession. We have such politicians in our country, but only a handfull,” Chandrasiri said.

“But I believe such exemplary individuals are present in this youth parliament” he said. Youth parliamentarians receive knowledge in disciplines, such as, politics, arts, science, administration and many others at the Youth Parliament. It will assist individuals to become complete politicians instead of producing politicians who go against expectations and engage in politics which fair to produce the right benefit.

Special Guest, Chairman of the National Youth Services Council, attorney-at -law Lalith Piyum Perera and a number of officials from the National Youth Services Council and the Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry were present at the occasion.
