Life-time ban for using banned substances

The government will ban sportsmen who are found using banned substances for life, Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage told Parliament yesterday.

Making the winding up speech of the debate on the votes of the Sports Ministry during the third reading stage debate on the budget proposals, the minister said that over the past ten months, the ministry had taken crucial steps to avoid the downfall of discipline in sports. "I would like to remind the House that 65 percent of the punishments thus far given by the Sports Ministry with regard to doping were given during my tenure as the Sports Minister.

All sportspersons of this country are well aware that the Institute of Sports Medicine which is under the Sports Ministry was not acting with responsibility during the past.

We wanted to create trust among the sportspersons of this country with regard to the Institute of Sports Medicine.
