Esraj is a string instrument that produces a tone considered to be
the closes to the human voice. Its melodious expression of emotions
latent in the unfathomable depths of human mind such as sweet-sorrow of
parting, melancholy and piety is inimitable on any other instrument.
Sarath played Esraj when he was just twelve and continued classical
studies under Vishared H de S Jayasekera and at the Bhatkande University
of Music, Lucknow, India and follows the Bhatkande classical Indian
tradition.
He has participated in numerous radio, television and stage
performances on classical and light music and contributed to musical
soundtracks of Sri Lankan movies including Pradeep Ratnayake’s musical
score in the Dr Lester James Peris’ Wekande Walauwa.
Sarath has released three Esraj Instrumental CDs and a concert DVD
to-date. Sarath Kumarasinghe lives in Toronto, Canada and performs to a
variety of audiences in Canada and USA on a regular basis. He is also a
renowned music tutor in Ontario. His website is www.sathsara.com.
