Harsha powers Rajans to win

Dharmaraja College, Kandy stunned Kingswood College to score a two
nil win on the opening day of the inaugural Central Province boys and
girls under 19 Hockey Championship organize by the Central Province
Sports Ministry and worked off at the Nandamithra International Hockey
Stadium, Matale yesterday. The matches will be continued today at 8 am.
It was a prestigious win for the Rajans over their traditional rivals
Kingswoodians.
The architect of Rajans win was centre half Harsha Egodage who
slammed a goal each in either half.
The Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake and Deputy
Minister of Higher Education Nandamithra Ekanayake were the chief guest
at the colourful opening ceremony.
Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake speaking on the occasion said that it
was during one of his visit to Canada around 15 years he saw that hockey
being played on astro turf and decided that this should be introduced to
Sri Lanka if we are to reach international standards.
He said that he set the ball rolling and this Hockey stadium was born
with astro turf carpetting. But this astro turf has seen better days and
needs immediate replacement in it is over 10 years old. Steps will be
taken in consultation with the Minister Of Sports to redevelop this
astro turf.
