Police to charge woman over penis attack

US: A 69-year-old US woman who allegedly tried to cut off her husband's penis with a pair of scissors has been released on bail, while prosecutors mull whether to bring charges, lawyers said Monday.

Virginia Valdez posted $100,000 bail and was freed from jail on Sunday, a day after being arrested following the alleged assault on her 62-year-old husband.

A Palm Springs Police Department spokeswoman said Valdez was taken into custody on Saturday, after officers were called to the couple's home in response to a complaint by her husband.

"Officers made contact with the 62-year-old male victim, who reported that his wife had attempted to sever his penis with scissors, resulting in injuries to the area," said spokeswoman Sgt. Melissa Desmarais.

"The victim received medical attention for treatment of a non-life threatening wound and has subsequently been released from the hospital," she added, declining to name the husband.

Valdez was arrested on suspicion of mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon and spousal abuse, Desmarais said. AFP
