Thirty six new irrigation projects
Irrigation and Water Resources Management Minister Nimal Siripala de
Silva told Parliament yesterday that 36 new irrigation projects would be
implemented under a 10-year plan.
Participating in the debate on the third reading on Budget 2012, the
minister said it was a very 'challenging time for us when the country
recently experienced a drought and flood situation.'
The service rendered by officials of the Irrigation Department and
the Mahaweli Authority to clean all canals and waterways and to renovate
culverts and bridges is commendable. The minister further said a number
of irrigation projects have been initiated under the "Wari Pubuduwa"
programme. The government has allocated Rs 36 billion this year for the
development of not only waterways for irrigation purposes, but, also to
provide water for drinking purposes," the minister further said. SM, IR
