Doctors produced by Sri Lanka are in demand due to the high quality
of medical education and training, Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne said.
He was addressing the 49th anniversary of the World Congress of
Integrated Medicines 2011 at the BMICH yesterday.
The Prime Minister said that Sri Lanka is one of the main countries
offering free medical education for students and free medical service
for its citizens.
"Sri Lankan doctors are preferred in other countries because of their
wide knowledge and experience. The medical field in Sri Lanka developed
rapidly in the past five years due to the far-sighted vision of
President Mahinda Rajapaksa who has given priority for the country's
health," he added.
The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to China for introducing
acupuncture to the world. "I, myself got acupuncture treatment and I
must say that the results were remarkable," he said.
He said Professor Anton Jayasuriya introduced the acupuncture
treatment system to Sri Lanka 40 years ago. "The treatment has been very
successful. Dr. Jayasuriya's clinic alone cures over 200 patients daily.
All patients are treated free of charge here," the Prime Minister said.
Deputy Minister Duminda Dissanayaka, UNP MP and Opposition Whip John
Amaratunga, JVP MP Sunil Handunneththi and All Ceylon Buddhist Congress
Chairman Jagath Sumathipala also participated.
